About the Project

Campu: An American Story is a project facilitated by photographer Haruka Sakaguchi about the forced removal and incarceration of Japanese Americans during World War II. Once completed, this website will showcase portraits and testimonies of survivors and their descendants at their respective camps, along with a historical timeline and educational materials about this dark chapter in American history.

This project is supported by National Geographic Society.

Seeking: Participants

I am currently looking to collaborate with survivors and descendants of the 10 concentration camps operated by the War Relocation Authority during World War II: Amache, Gila River, Heart Mountain, Jerome, Manzanar, Minidoka, Poston, Rohwer, Topaz, and Tule Lake. I am interested in meeting multigenerational families who have plans to visit their camp and would be willing to have their pilgrimage photographed and documented.

Trailer

Gregory Samson is a Sansei – or third generation Japanese American – whose mother was incarcerated at Tule Lake. Follow along as he and his daughter Midori make a pilgrimage to the site to remember their ancestors and piece together their family history.
